VERTEBRA
1981
PRISON, GRONINGEN, HOLLAND
1,20 METER HIGH
BRONZE ON BLACK GRANITE BASE

Vertebra is a sculpture from the times that Hans Mes, who just had left the Academy of Art, still experimented with the theme of life and death, bones and eggs, meat and reptiles. The sculpture was bought by the government to be placed in the prison in Groningen. A good choice if it would also symbolize a backbone for people to re-enter society.
