MAN WITH DOG CART
1985
PEKELA’S, HOLLAND
1,85 HIGH, 4 METER LONG
BRONZE

This Man With Dog Cart is a memory to old traditions in the village of Pekela’s.  It shows a man transporting things with a cart pulled by a dog, which is no longer a custom in Holland now. The sculpture is one of three sculptures in Oude Pekela in which an old profession from this region is expressed in a form that expresses both the desolate social aspects and the type of work. It is therefore a denial of the nostalgia that is usually expected in this type of artwork. Many professional groups used the pulling power of a dog to transport their trade, such as the petroleum peddler. For the dog Hans Mes used his own dog as a model. In February 2017, the bronze dog was stolen. After a thorough restoration, the statue has been relocated.
