THE LEAP
1998
PHILIPS, ZHUHAI, CHINA
6,12 METER HIGH
RED COPPER, STAINLESS STEEL AND COATED STEEL.

The Leap was placed at the opening of a new Philips production plant for shavers in Zhuhai, China. The sculpture compares the start of their factory with a pole vaulter, who prepares to jump, just like Philips has been calculating each step to take and reach the highest production in the market. The plant in Zhuhai is a satellite of their production plant in Drachten, Holland. That is why I took a ring as the centre of the pole vaulter to represent the Dutch factory, while the head of the pole vaulter suggests to be a planet circling around that stainless steel ring. The head also symbolizes the world wide activity of Philips. The pole refers to a hair than can be shaved.
