MONSTRUM
1982
STOLEN
1,85 METER HIGH
BRONZE

Monstrum is the Latin name for monster. The sculpture appeals to fantasy of the visitors of the park, located in the neighbourhood of Vinkhuizen in Groningen. Because “Vinkhuizen” in Dutch litteraty means “finch houses” the monster looks like a finch. Because the sculpture is quite remote it is very strong, has thick bronze and can resist a small fire in it if made by children. At the reconstruction of this area the sculpture was not safely stored by the city government and placed in the bushes. It was stolen and probably sold for the bronze. The city government commissioned Hans Mes for the replacement of sculpture for this neighbourhood, to create three new sculptures. This group of sculptures is called Outlawed. It’s also in this portfolio.
