LOST TOWER 1
1992
STOLEN FROM WEIWERD, HOLLAND
2,30 METER HIGH
RED COPPER

This sculpture, Lost Tower 1, was placed on a graveyard, right on the spot where once the church of a village stood, surrounded by the houses of the ancient village of Weiwerd. But the whole village and also the church were broken down to be sacrificed for an industrial harbour zone. The former villagers asked Hans Mes to create a sculpture which will memorize their village and cherish their feelings. The sculpture has two sprouts as the symbol of growth and the top of the church tower to memorize the highest point for recognition when approaching the village. In a poem about this sculpture Hans Mes wrote:

LOST TOWER

Constructing a future perspective

The horizon lost a tower

Something remained visible:

Growth eternally replaces

The temporary.
