GRASS SPARROWS
1998
RIJNWOUDE, HOLLAND
5 METER HIGH
BRONZE AND COATED STEEL

Grass Sparrows are placed in this special area of natural environment in Holland. Here all meadows are several meters below sea level because monks pumped away the water to gain new land from the previous moor in the Medieval period and the soil was so moist that it sunk more and more. The lines of the grass symbolize the plants that once grew here. The monks used the willow branches for reinforcement of the banks of the canals that were dug. This structure now reappears in the grass leaves. The Grass Sparrows are typical local singing birds that live in the bushes here.
