BLACK TERNS
1998
RIJNWOUDE, HOLLAND
2 METER HIGH
BRONZE, RED COPPER AND COATED STEEL

The Black Terns refer to the grace of these birds, which are a protected species for this part of nature in Holland. They are called the swallows of the sea. These birds fly to Africa and return here each year to build their nests on a local floating water plant called Krabbescheer. The birds are placed on a leaf of this plant. The structure of the birds refers to the moor which was here in the ancient times of the Roman Empire.
