POLE VAULTER
1995
PHILIPS, DRACHTEN, HOLLAND
15 METER HIGH, 10 METER WIDE
COATED STEEL

This artwork, bridging the road between two buildings of Philips Consumer Lifestyle, was the outcome of an activity of a Philips customer day. That day all employees designed 1167 “master marks” to express the quality of their work to the internal and external customer, just like the guilds did in Medieval times. The customer day’s theme was: Bridging the gap. All the drawings have been transferred to the body of this Pole Vaulter, in Frisian language called Fierljepper. Friesland, where this sculpture is located, is a minority region in Holland, where the farmers used to jump from meadow to meadow crossing the canals with this pole. So this sculpture is the local way of bridging the gap. Every employee that once made his or her drawing is part of the body of this sculpture to show that their quality will be a reliable contribution to the quality of Philips products.
