COATED STEEL, GRANITE AND WATER WORKS

Peat Shipping is a sculpture telling the story of the city of Zwartsluis where shipping, business, peat and water gave it its means of existence. In the water which once was used for shipping the peat Hans Mes created a sailing vessel carrying a load of peat. The brown granite stones visualize the peat and therefore are carved as if they consist of two volumes according to the size of a piece of peat. The stones also refer to the red squares which are shown in the ancient weapon shield of Zwartsluis. The water that gets against the ship makes clear that this city still has a lot of activity as a busy harbour for recreational sailors.
